The food poisoning incident was a disaster, yes, but it was also just a symptom of a larger problem. You don't just "damage your vocal chords" from being violently ill, or else we'd hear about it in far more singers. It did such a number on Labrie's voice because the damage was already there, building up over time from the raspy belting style he started adopting more in 93/94. Dream Theater's first critical mistake was insisting that he sing like that in the first place in order to be more of an "archetypal metal frontman" (their words, not mine) and their second mistake was insisting on pressing on with the Awake tour after the damage became apparent. Labrie was 100% the victim in this situation, aiming to please his new band and literally sacrificing his body in the process.

The wild thing is Sting penned songs that required Stewart’s energy. When Sting went solo he could only draw the best of the best musicians to carry his tunes in recording sessions.

I would have liked to have seen more footage of Andy dancing around the stage. He looked like he was really into it.
